Public Relations Update
Anne MacDonald
AGM - Guest speaker originally
chosen for the meeting is unable to attend, so as this goes to press, I
am still looking for an interesting speaker. I will let Jeanette know as
soon as booked.
Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check
Program - National Office for CPS and Transport Canada are still working
on changes to the Program. More definitive information will be available
after Mar 31/09
Instructor Development Program -
This is a 4 night program of instruction, practice and a test to certify
our Squadron members in some of the techniques that enable members to
enjoy comfortable teaching. We will cover a variety of presentation
techniques, classroom management, dealing with student questions and
some general "do's and don’ts" that enable members to share
their knowledge and skill with confidence. We can start the course
anytime a group of 3 or 4 are ready. You don't have to currently be an
instructor to take the seminar, nor are we going to MAKE you teach if
you don't want to! It is a personal growth program, and the skills
learned are applicable to any teaching situation.
Call Anne MacDonald (604 465-4748)
if interested.

Spring Social Report
Peggy Roberts
Our Wine and Cheese/ Graduation on
January 30, had a great turnout. New members from the Fall Boating class
were sworn in by Anne MacDonald, a Life member of Alouette Squadron.
That means that Anne has been an active and hard working member of our
squadron ( as well as the Pacific mainland District) for many years and
is now entitled to free membership. So you see, there are some rewards
for dedication.
Our guest speaker from Dophin
Insurance gave a very thorough review of the types of boat insurance. He
also gave a rundown of the advantages of the CPS Insurance policy that
is available to members only. With this policy, you get a discount with
every CPS course you have taken. So don’t forget to ask about it the
next time you renew your insurance.
Our next gathering is the Annual
General Meeting on March 27. If you are at all interested in any of the
positions on the Bridge, now is the time to let Al Slater know. As well
as the short meeting there will be the usual great food and as always,
Ross Wright with his beer and wine at the Bar.
At the last Social, members were
asked to share their knowledge about where you can find certain boating
items and services. Listed below are some of the places that members
have found over the years. If you have any other suggestions, let us
know and we will add them to the list. Or if you are having a hard time
finding a particular item or service, let us know that as well, and we
will ask the members if they can help.

Boater Blessing Then and Now
Peggy Roberts
A Boater's Blessing from Yesterday:
- May there always be water under your boat,
- May she always be seaworthy, ever afloat,
- May the bilge pump be certain to work night and
day,
- May the compass and charts always show the safe
way,
- May you find gentle harbour as every day ends,
- May you lower your anchor amidst peace and good
friends.
A Boater's Blessing Today:
- May your drive shaft be saved after hitting
that rock,
- May your bow be rebuilt after ramming that
dock,
- May you find that new Rolex that fell
overboard,
- May your neighbour quit stealing your slip's
power cord,
- May FeBreeze mask that musty smell under your
berth,
- May you someday owe less than the damn boat is
worth.

If you haven’t checked out the
Canadian Power and Sail Squadron website lately, now is the perfect time
to do so. Big changes are happening, and we need your help. The national
website now allows you to update your membership profile, as well as get
information on your annual membership renewal.
This is very important for us so
that we keep your contact information current. Future mail-outs,
newsletters, rosters and events will utilize the information that we
have on hand in the national database. And you have to help keep it
up-to-date!
Go to www.cps-ecp.ca
and click on “My Profile” in the left-hand menu. If you have never
accessed this before, select “First Time Visitor” and fill out the
registration. Once you have logged in, select “Update your Member
Profile”. You will be taken to 7 screens where they will collect your
contact information. Be sure to provide your email address, as almost
all communications will be done primarily by email moving forward! They
will also collect information about your boat, your port location and
your primary marina.
If you have any trouble using the
online features of the National Website Membership features, send Don
Griffin an email to dongriff@telus.net .
It is also very important for me,
as the editor and publisher of The Hailer, so that we can get this
newsletter out. We are still sending some of the hailers out by
traditional Canada Post, but often we are sending them out by “email-only”.
Without providing us with your email address, you may miss out on your
edition of “The Hailer”.
In the months to come, we will be
moving our old website onto the National Website – we will have a nice
new look, and a whole bunch of new content too!
If you have any ideas on articles
or improvements to the hailer, or anything we can do to “get the
message out” better – please drop me a line to richardrobinson@niftynetworks.ca
.
